Bio

A child with the genes for PKU (a recessive disorder that leads to brain damage because proteins aren’t digested properly) is raised to adulthood under a strict low-protein diet that prevents the gene from being activated. He lives a normal life and eventually becomes a father. As a genetic counselor, explain whether the fact that his gene is inactive affects the probability his future children might inherit the PKU allele.

Interactive Food Intake Analysis

RECORD: You will use the USDA interactive tool (suggested provided below) to log food/beverage intake for a three-day period. Make sure to include everything that is consumed. There is no judgment on your selections used in scoring, only your completion of the assignment. Save a copy of the USDA Super Tracker reports “Food Groups and Calories” and “Nutrients” and attach them (use 3 day period) for grading.

https://www.supertracker.usda.gov/default.aspx

[Reports can be created and then exported as PDF, MS Excel, or MS Word file. File can be saved normally using “save as…” once exported.  Option to export is on right side of window/screen.

As you record your intake, think about why you eat the foods you do on a regular basis.  Consider the potential reasons below.

Flavor – Cost – Convenience – Nutrition and Health – Culture – Religion -Food industry/media – Peers – Environmental concerns

Analyze your nutritional intake, guided by the results from the Log your 3-Day Diary (from the USDA site)

WRITE-UP: Write a reflective paper of 2-3 pages of content based on your experience and results.  Use the list of “food feeling” descriptive adjectives to describe how you felt after consuming the foods. If none of these adjectives adequately describes the feeling, then add your own. If your experience resulted in any negative or uncertain feelings, explain a plan of action to change your habits to achieve better results.  How did the reasons listed above influence your choice of food, and if those influences were negative, how will you go about making healthier choices in the future?

As an aspect of your analysis, describe your opinions about the nutritional analysis program you used and the level of accessibility and ease of use.  If you did not use the USDA SuperTracker, how does what you used compare to the USDA Supertracker?  Is the tracker helpful?  Could it be helpful to others? Do you think they were helpful?  Do you think they would be helpful to others?  Will you sign up for any of the goal trackers or personal coaching available on the site?  Why or why not?

Finally, determine if and how completing this assessment would aid in planning a menu.

Note that you should have four attachments:  (2) two USDA reports, (1) 3-day food diary, and the (1) reflection paper.

Since this is a reflection piece that does not require research or sources beyond the interactive USDA reports, references and citations are not required, but please include a title page using APA format.

Week 4 Outbreak At Watersedge

  • Go to the website using this link: http://www.mclph.umn.edu/watersedge/
  • Click the Play button to start the game.
  • Follow the instructions. They will lead you on a search for an infected organism.
  • Once you have found the infected organism, write a three- to four-page review of the process you went through and the results you obtained. You must identify the disease found and define the epidemiological process you used. Make sure to describe how you used it. This paper must be written in APA format, typed in Times New Roman with 12-point font, and double-spaced with 1” margins. Use at least two references that support your findings.

Lab 2-Germination Rates

Choose 4 forage species. Work to choose species that may be comparable in some ways (white and sub clover; perennial and annual ryegrass; tall fescue and orchard grass). Choose a combination of grasses and legumes (consider forms).

—Obtain seeds for the species you choose. Plant the seeds to promote germination. Photograph and journal the progress. Be consistent and clear about what you are doing with all species. We want to see what you did and how long it took for germination to occur.

Remember that you have weeks to complete this lab but you do need to start it promptly to reduce stress. Submit when you have seen the germination rates for the 4 species. I grade on the quality of work not on when the lab is submitted.

BIOLOGY

Read part 2 of the case study, Crazy about Cryptids. Answer all 3  questions at the end. Total word count must be 250-350 words total  between all 3 answers. Part 1 is also attached for reference.

Nutrition

Your community includes people from diverse backgrounds. Answer the following questions related to how culture affects nutrition.

1. How does your culture shape decisions that you make about nutrition? (Culture includes history, values, politics, economics, communication styles, beliefs, and practices.)

2. Describe at least 1 different cultures present at your community. How do these cultures impact food choices?

3. Describe how you interact with someone from another culture related to diet. Provide specific examples.

4. Assume that you are preparing a Thanks Giving dinner for a group of your classmates that represent a variety of cultures. Describe how you will prepare the menu and set the table. Include how you will address food safety at the picnic.

Explore ways to address the problem of food insecurity in your community.

1. What programs are available to meet the nutrition needs of individuals in the area?

2. What types of options exist in the area to purchase food?

3. What role do you believe society should take to ensure that individuals have access to adequate healthy food?

4. What do you see as your role in the community related to proper nutrition?

Lab Report

The requirements and guidelines for the lab report are listed below:

Includes

Title

: Typically, 10-12 words long; includes descriptive words and phrases that capture the core message of the lab report

Includes

Abstract

: Short in length and lets the reader know briefly what the whole paper is

about. It is only one paragraph (150-250 words) and covers the highlights of why the experiment was conducted and a brief highlight of results. The abstract should include the presumptive identity of the unknown here, using proper binomial nomenclature.

Remember: an abstract is NOT the same thing as an introduction!

Includes

Introduction

: This section provides general background for the purpose of experiment.

The section introduces EACH test, media, or stain, what it tells you about the microorganism,

and justification for utilizing it (the manual should be cited here). Results do NOT go here!

Includes

Methods

: Citing the lab manual, outline all the methods used starting with any staining

techniques, test media that was inoculated, etc. Discuss the aseptic techniques needed throughout the experiment. This section is written in past tense, since it is something already done! After reading your lab report, someone with the  exact same unknown bacteria should be  able to follow these methods and come out with the same results. List all reagents used and how much you used for each test conducted. EVERY test performed MUST be mentioned! (Even

if the test produced a negative result.) Results do NOT belong here!

Includes

Results

: Describe here the microorganism isolated and what it looks like. What is the

colony morphology? What does it look like microscopically? Explain any physical changes you observed in media or tests that were used. Just because something turned a color, does not just make it positive or negative. Explain what the color change MEANS, not just that it changed color. Explain the biochemistry behind the different resulting physical characteristics of the media (things like hydrolysis, pH indicator, mixed acid fermentation, etc. might be helpful

phrases to use.) No black precipitate in the TSIA is still a result (albeit negative) and should be included! You can include any charts, graphs, tables, and pictures that may be useful. If you decide to use images from the internet, make sure credit is given where due!

Includes

Discussion

: In this section, guide the reader through your thought process and process

of elimination used. What do the test results MEAN? Just because something turned a color, doesn’t make it positive or negative. Explain what the color change MEANS, not just that it changed color. Explain what the results imply as to what the bacteria are or are not capable of.

Do not forget to cite sources used here to help you determine the identity of your microorganism. (This may be a mixture of primary and secondary sources or media literature.)

Unknown Lab Report Assignment Information

This section should incorporate at least

3

primary literature sources and a total of 5 sources for

the entire paper.

Includes

References

: 5 total sources are required, including at LEAST 3 primary sources

HA535 Healthcare Statistics

You have been recently hired as an Epidemiological Research Assistant at your county’s Health Department. It is only day 1 on the job and you have been asked to develop a presentation for the County Commissioners describing a health disparity within your community.

In your report, you are asked to summarize the demographical information about the population, as well as summarize the health disparity. The County Commissioners ask that you present your findings in a PowerPoint® presentation.

In statistics or epidemiology, when you are asked to summarize an issue, this means that you must do so by using quantitative information. For this Assignment, please summarize by using only descriptive statistics. In order to procure this information, you will need to access databases supported by your State Public Health Department, CDC, CMS, etc.

You should pick a health disparity applicable to your future career.

Throughout your presentation, you must appropriately evaluate the effectiveness of descriptive statistics in summarizing the demographics of the population and the health disparity. Provide contextual information where appropriate.

Requirements

  • Presentation is 10–12 slides in length.
  • Use of the speaker’s notes area contains detailed information, while the slides appear uncluttered.
  • Visual representations of data are used to summarize descriptive statistics of demographical information.
  • Visual representations of data are used to summarize descriptive statistics of the health disparity.
  • Descriptive statistics are evaluated for effectiveness. Contextual information is provided.
