The 4-MAT Book Review system is a way of responding to readings that requires the learner to interact with new ideas on several levels. The book to be reviewed is Waithe’s and Gallager’s, A Case For Marriage: Why Married People are Happier, Healthier and Better off Financially. Please use the following format in preparing 4-MAT Book Reviews:

1. Summary: Summarize what you have read as if you were the author boiling down the book into 150–200 tight words. Prove that you comprehend the readings by writing a no-nonsense summary.

2. Concrete responses: Get vulnerable! In 200–250 words, relate a personal life episode that this book connected with in your own life experience. Relate your story in first person, describing action, quoting sentences you remember hearing or saying. In the teaching style of Jesus, this is a do-it-yourself parable, case study, confession. You will remember almost nothing you have read unless you make this critical, personal connection. What video memory began to roll? This is your chance to tell your story and make new ideas found in the book your own. (Military newly wed no kids)

3. Reflection: What new questions pop up for you in response to what you have read? Keep a rough note sheet at hand as you read. Begin with questions like, “What would I like further information on?” Where do I not agree/strongly agree with the author?” or “What bothers me/excites me about this content?” This section must be at least 200–250 words.

4. Application: How does the information in the book influence how you are going to continue your own personal growth process? What actions or changes are you going to make in your life as a result of your learning? Your response here is a matter of obedience first, questions later. Be precise in summarizing your action steps (limit these comments to about 150–200 words).

Read the assigned case. Before you read the court’s decision determine how you would find if you were the judge. Write a discussion post based on your decision. After your post, go back in the case. Were you correct? Did the court find the way you thought they would find? Did they do so for the same reasons? Post a reflective post on your analysis of the case versus the court’s analysis.

You must read at least three other students’ reviews and comment. Your replies must be no less than 100 words each.

2. Case Brief Guidelines:

• Students will brief all assigned cases for the module in which they are assigned. The case briefs are to be the student’s own work. The learning process takes place with the student reading, analyzing, and summarizing the facts and issues in a case; copying someone else’s work is not part of the learning process. However, students may consult with each other, discuss cases, and use the product of those discussions to write their briefs.
• Your classmates will depend on you to write a thorough, accurate brief of the case(s) assigned. You, in turn, will rely on your classmates to do the same for their cases.
• A copy of your brief will be posted in this module’s Case Brief Discussion board.
• Be prepared to explain, justify, or dissent from your assigned case, as the instructor and/or classmates may query you about the case.

3. Case Brief Discussion

In the Case Briefs Discussion area, give your constructive feedback on the submissions that have been posted by your classmates. Your remarks can be opinion, but must be based on your experience, research, and/or prior learning. Use this area to gain valuable insight on how your fellow colleagues approached the Case Briefs and how your professor gave feedback and suggestions. Apply this information going forward to strengthen your own work. Apply this information going forward to enrich your understanding of the material, improve your ability to apply that knowledge to new content, and to strengthen your own work.

You must read at least three other students’ reviews and comment no later than Sunday 11:59 PM EST/EDT. Your replies must be no less than 100 words each.

Select the improvement model that would work best for the following performance problems. Explain your choices.

1. More than 25 percent of the insurance claims submitted by a clinic are rejected because of mistakes made by the clinic’s billing clerks.

2. Patients experience long wait times and delays for outpatient diagnostic services.

3. A large number of hospitalized patients develop a wound infection following surgery.

4. Labor costs are too high in the radiology department.

5. Patients’ overall satisfaction with the emotional support provided by nurses is lower than the satisfaction levels reported for other hospitals.

6. In a pediatric clinic, many Spanish-speaking patients are unable to communicate by phone with the receptionists and caregivers because of language barriers.

You have taken the position of a consultant to interrogators. You begin by reviewing and observing the process by which potential suspects are identified by eyewitnesses. Routinely, a suspect is brought into a lineup room with five other individuals who are of the same ethnicity as the suspect. Not all are the same height and weight. Not all have the same hair color or facial hair. The police officers who have been conducting the investigation also handle lineups.

You are asked to evaluate this procedure and make recommendations for improvement.
