Research Study

In the study by Young, Justice, & Erdberg (2006) male offenders receiving psychiatric treatment were studied to discover the prevalence and relationships in regards to self-injurious behaviors. For this study 242 randomly selected male inmates were chosen. All of these participants were receiving psychiatric treatment in prison at the time they were selected. Each man was administered psychological and neuropsychological evaluations and their treatment was monitored while they were in the prison psychiatric hospital (Young et al., 2006). The participants in this study who harmed themselves were the compared to the participants who did not harm themselves (Young et al., 2006). From this study it was discovered that 18% of these participants harmed themselves severe enough to need medical attention (Young et al., 2006). It was also discovered that inmates who are young, abuse drugs, and who scored high on the antisocial lifestyle section of the Psychopathy Checklist Revised or those who had an Axis II borderline personality disorder were found to harm themselves more than others (Young et al., 2006). These individuals were also found to have a higher likelihood of assaulting staff (Young et al., 2006).

Important for Forensic Psychology Professionals in Correctional Settings

This information is important to forensic psychology professionals working in correctional settings because these factors offer important insight into the risks associated with inmates self-harming and even assaulting prison staff. This information is beneficial to identifying the risk factors for self-harm and the implications associated with treatment can then be suggested. This information gives correctional officers, staff, and forensic psychology professionals a way to identify the inmates who are more likely to hurt themselves. This means that these people can be looked after more and given further psychological and psychiatric services to help decrease the likelihood of them hurting themselves or others. Risk assessments can also be utilized by the forensic psychology professional on these inmates to help further substantiate the possibility of self-injurious behaviors. Some risk assessments that can be utilized for self-injurious or suicidal behaviors are; the Beck Depression Inventory, the Beck Hopelessness Scale, and the Reasons for Attempting Suicide Questionnaire and scales of Internal Perturbation-Based Reasons and Extrapunitive/Manipulative Motivations suicidal behavior or intent (Holden & Kroner, 2003).

Use of These Results by a Forensic Psychology Professional in a Correctional Setting

A forensic psychology professional might use these results to gain a better picture of the prison inmates who have a higher likelihood of self-injuring. The inmates can be cross-referenced upon admission for the associated risk factors and these inmates can then be tested further if necessary for self-injurious and suicidal behaviors but they can also be pin-pointed to receive more psychological and psychiatric services due to their high-risk status. This information can hopefully help reduce the number of self-injuries by prison inmates which would in turn also hopefully reduce prison suicides because at times it is possible that some of these self-injurious behaviors could go too far and end up killing the inmate instead of only inflicting self-injury.

1. The purpose of this assignment is to identify key stakeholders within your organization who are affected by, have influence over, or have an interest in solving the problem you are attempting to address with your action research project.

Stakeholder analysis requires you to examine a number of variables in relation to each individual or group you have identified. Use the “Stakeholder Analysis” spreadsheet to record the results of the stakeholder analysis.

Debate over the Intervention in Vietnam

By the beginning of the 1960s the United States had been indirectly engaged in Vietnam for some time. However, American involvement had been extremely limited. In 1964, with the Gulf of Tonkin resolution, the United States formally began to ramp up its commitment of troops. Even as the decision was being made there were doubts about whether this was the right choice for our country, and these doubts grew over time.

In an essay of 1000 to 1500 words compare and contrast the key arguments in these documents for and against American intervention in Vietnam. Overall, which side do you think presents a better case? You should provide at least three points of comparison (argument versus counter-argument).

Your arguments should be clearly supported by brief quotes taken from the primary source documents provided. This is NOT a research assignment — use only the documents provided.

I will have written assignments graded within one to two weeks of the due date. I make comments on the midterm essay and the primary source analysis paper, however, I’m not able to make comments on the final essay since I have to turn around the course grade very quickly. Essays will be graded on the following criteria:

I. Organization (how well you structure your argument)

  • You should have an introductory paragraph that briefly summarizes your answer to the question.
  • The body of the essay should be logically organized to support your argument. Usually a topical organization is best. For instance, if the question asks you to talk about economics, politics, and social structure, a logical form of organization would be to have a paragraph on economics, a paragraph on politics, etc.
  • Each paragraph in the body should begin with a clear topic sentence. A topic sentence indicates the main point you’re making in that paragraph. As a general rule of thumb, never start a paragraph with a statement of fact or a quote. Your paragraph should stay focused on proving that central point. For instance, if you indicate in your topic sentence thatyou will be making an argument about politics, don’t wander off into talking about economics.
  • Your essay should have a clear conclusion that summarizes the main points of your argument (your answer to the question)

II. Use of Evidence (how well you support your argument with historical facts)

  • Key assertions should be supported by specific historical facts rather than generalizations.
  • Evidence should be integrated into the argument. Just throwing out facts is not enough – you need to explain HOW the facts help prove your argument.
  • Facts should be CORRECT and RELEVANT. The first point is obvious. In the second case, students often dump a large quantity of facts into a paper without any regard to whether they relate to answering the question. This indicates that the student doesn’t really understand the significance of the evidence.

III. Overall Effectiveness of the Argument (Does your answer make historical sense)

  • The essay should actually make an analytical argument, not just provide a narration of events. In history we look at not just WHAT happened in the past, but WHY it happened and WHY it’s significant.
  • All elements of the question should be addressed. If the question has two components and you only address one, that’s not a complete answer.

In this recent debate, yet recurring historical theme, it is argued that immigration increases criminal activity, in the respective communities. Scarcely can one read or watch any media and not be provided a rationale for the deportation of immigrants as a result of their increased criminal activity. Most of the arguments have been premised on individual and ecological factors. This week, we address the findings from empirical support regarding the ability of immigration, and the respective cultures, to increase criminal activity within certain communities. Most notably, this week will be spent examining the impact of the oft noted theory of social disorganization on homicidal activity.
