Scales and Variables Assignment

INSTRUCTIONS: After reading the helps below, identify the scale of measurement and/or the IV and DV for each of the questions on page two. Use this paper to record your answer and upload it into Bb.

——————————————————————————————————————————————

Variables can be Nominal, Ordinal, Interval, or Ratio.

Designs also have an Independent Variable (IV) and a Dependent Variable (DV), or multiples of these as you will learn in a later module on factorials designs.

There are some hints to remembering the definition and being able to identify these. Consider the following, or you may come up with some on your own.

SCALES

NOMINAL= “name”

(Begins with “n” and just names something)

ORDINAL= “order”

(Begins with “o” and puts data in order without a specific distance between the points)

INTERVAL=”even”

(Goes one step beyond the Ordinal in that the distances between the data points are even; It does not have a “true zero” point meaning zero does not mean the absence of something.)

RATIO=”zero”

(ratiO/zerO; The distances between data points are even as in the Interval scale but there is also a true zero meaning that “zero” on the scale actually means that absence of the thing being measured.)

VARIABLES

Independent Variable (IV) = What “I” do to this variable affects the DV (The IV is the one that is manipulated)

Dependant Variable (DV) = This variable “depends” on what I do to the IV (The DV is the one that changes as a result of the IV -assuming there is an affect of one on the other)

how would you present the research to the public in light of the apparent discrepancy?

Some groups and organizations tend to want to present research findings only when it agrees with their beliefs or is favorable to them.  Militaries are often known to practice this, allowing results to be public only after they approve them.  Religious groups may also attempt to deny access to their members, or prevent research findings from being made public if the findings disagree with their religious beliefs.    Of course, this is not good research practice.  In fact, by making findings public, it gives others the opportunity to analyze the findings and validate the procedures.  Remember, many of the errors in research are due more to the interpretation of findings rather than the procedures themselves.  We should also remember that any research can only tell us a small piece of knowledge and can in fact be incorrect in its design and results.  Humans are imperfect in our research efforts, even though we want to pursue perfection in what we do. For these reasons, we know research is imperfect, but so are our efforts to understand scripture.      For this discussion, imagine you have just conducted what you believe is a well-designed ground breaking research.  You have conducted the research and analyzed your findings.  You can think in generalities, or think of some specific topic area where this could happen.  If your findings seemed to contradict what you believed about scripture, how would you reconcile that?  It’s not as easy as saying, “I would just follow the scriptures.”  First, because you could be wrong in your understanding of scripture, or you could have made some error in the research design.  Second, because now that you have discovered something in your research, there is some level of obligation to present it to the public, even though you don’t like or agree with the findings.  How would you reconcile this in your mind?  What actions might it lead you to take?  And how would you present the research to the public in light of the apparent discrepancy?    Be sure to use depth of thought in your discussion and thorough (at least 250 words).  Also include at least two replies to other students that contribute to the discussion (usually at least 100 words).  Be respectful of other’s views even though you are free to disagree with them.

limitations of Western psychology in non-Western countries.

Discussion: Characteristics of Indigenous Psychology

Indigenous psychology is an emerging field of psychology that relies on a local understanding of human behavior to develop theories, conduct research, and address challenges. Indigenous psychology evolved in response to the use of Western psychology in countries where it did not seem to fit. The main purpose of indigenous psychology is to practice psychology in a way that is appropriate for the social, political, historical, and cultural contexts in the area it serves.

Your course text highlights the limitations of general psychology, a term the authors frequently use interchangeably with Western psychology and mainstream psychology. In the article “Origins and Development of Indigenous Psychologies: An International Analysis,” 15 contributing authors describe the characteristics of indigenous psychology in different regions. They also detail the limitations of Western psychology when applied to non-Western countries.

To prepare for this Discussion:

· Review Chapter 5 in your course text, paying particular attention to the sections on “Limitations of General Psychology” and “Indigenous Psychologies.”

· Review the article “Origins and Development of Indigenous Psychologies: An International Analysis.” Consider the similarities and differences in what authors from different parts of the world have to say.

· Think about the limitations of Western psychology in non-Western countries.

· Reflect on the characteristics of indigenous psychology.

· Think about how indigenous psychology responds to the limitations of Western psychology.

· Select two limitations of Western psychology in non-Western cultures.

· Then, select two characteristics of indigenous psychology that could be used in response to the limitation you selected.

With these thoughts in mind:

By Day 3

Post an explanation of two limitations of Western psychology in non-Western countries. Next, describe two characteristics of indigenous culture that speak to the need for indigenous psychology. Finally, provide examples as to how these two characteristics of indigenous culture could be used in response to the two limitations of Western psychology you identified.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

What types of media would you include in your announcements?

Social media can be a powerful tool to help you get the word out to a wide audience in a relatively short amount of time.

  1. Imagine that you are organizing a fundraiser for a local charity. Explore the various social media outlets discussed in this module or that you are aware of from your own personal and professional use (examples include Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, Instagram, etc.).
  2. Compose two announcements advertising the event to be posted on two different social media sites. The first should be geared toward your friends, family, and other social acquaintances. The second should be written for co-workers or professional colleagues or acquaintances.
  3. What types of media would you include in your announcements? Written, photographic, video, or audio? Would the same media be appropriate for both announcements? Where could you get this media? Is it OK to copy whatever clip-art you find on the web? Why or why not? Is it OK to use part of your favorite song? Why or why not?
  4. Discuss which social network site would be most appropriate for each example and explain why. Be sure to include a brief reflection on the differences in tone, style, and content of the two postings in terms of their intended audiences.

Your initial response should be at least 150 words.

Identify the goals of counseling

in this module, you explored theoretical approaches to family counseling. These approaches include family theories emphasizing the client’s background, emotions, thoughts, and actions. Your exploration included the basic assumptions about, the role of the therapist in, and the nature of the treatment associated with each of these approaches.

In this assignment, you will apply a family counseling theory/approach to a case study.

Case study below

The Case of Jeremy © 2014 Argosy University M6A1: Case Study 2  The following case study is adapted from Pearson’s MyCounselingLab for Counseling Theories (Seligman & Reichenberg, 2014).

You are a mental health counselor in an outpatient mental health center. Jeremy’s mother, Jane, called asking for an appointment. She was referred to you by a behavioral managed care organization. Jeremy’s mother states that the juvenile office has suggested counseling for her son. Jeremy, who is 15, and his stepfather, Al, had an altercation because Jeremy threatened to harm his parents and destroyed some furniture. Jeremy’s parents reported this incident to the juvenile officer. Jeremy is also on out-ofschool suspension for talking back to school authorities and for fighting at school.

Al is 35 and has been married to Jane, also 35, for the last 9 years. Each has been married before. Jeremy sees his biological father about once per month. Al’s daughter, Jessica, is 13. Jessica lives with her mother and visits Al every other weekend and two days during each week. Both Al and Jane are high school graduates, and both are employed. Jeremy had attended counseling when he was in the primary grades and was diagnosed with attention deficit/hyperactive disorder. His grades in school are average, though he has one F in English/Language. His parents have hired a tutor to help him with this class. Jeremy has had detention about once per week for the last several months and is now on out-of-school suspension.

His parents report almost daily calls from the school regarding Jeremy’s behavior. Jeremy’s at-home altercation with his stepfather has led to a 3-month probation with the juvenile office. During the assessment interview, the family members often interrupt one another. It resembles a conversation food fight. At no time does anyone have the opportunity to finish a sentence. They do not engage in any eye contact and speak primarily in negative terms with one another. Jeremy seems to be easily frustrated and freely expresses himself, though no one seems to listen. Jeremy also mumbles quite a bit and does not make eye contact with anyone in the room. His conversation social skills seem to be absent, though when he does talk, he is disrespectful and emits a tone of anger.

Toward the end of the assessment session, Jeremy states he wants to do better but is unable to come up with ways to help his situation. He states he gets into trouble most when he just blurts out whatever comes to his mind. Jane has difficulty recognizing anything good about Jeremy (for instance, that he keeps most of his grades in the average range or his coming willingly for counseling). Al processes the altercation that occurred at home saying he was angry with Jeremy and that Jeremy would not listen to him. Al and Jane state that they have, on average, two arguments per day with Jeremy. The most regular and intense arguments are usually between Jeremy and Jane. All present agree that Jeremy is not using drugs, does not drink alcohol, and is not taking any prescription drugs. Jeremy does have friends and enjoys sport activities. He loves working on his computer. In a session, Jeremy is generally cooperative.

Jane states that the juvenile officer would like a report at the end of counseling. Protocol for the managed care organization is that the counseling professional should send a copy of the treatment plan to the primary care physician. Consequently, releases of information are signed to give permission to the clinical counselor to communicate with the juvenile officer and to the primary care physician.

    • Identify the goals of counseling (also worded in a language fitting your chosen theory).
    • Identify the techniques the counselor is likely to use.
    • Identify the strengths and limitations of your selected theory.

What ethical issues are involved in this case?

  • Identify at least two issues from the relevant ethical standards from the American Counseling Association’s (ACA’s) code of ethics (American Counseling Association [ACA], 2014).
  • Describe the ethical approach to handling those issues in this case.
  • Provide at least one strategy to use if you, as the counselor, are unsure about how to manage those issues ethically.

Support your rationale and analyses by using at least two resources from professional literature in your response. Professional literature may include the Argosy University online library resources; relevant textbooks; peer-reviewed journal articles; and websites created by professional organizations, agencies, or institutions (websites ending in .edu or .gov).

How do you see your role in the profession evolving through time?

Week 3 – Assignment

Personal Mission Statement

Writing a personal mission statement offers the opportunity to establish what’s important in your professional life. A personal mission statement is often an integral part of a job or graduate-level application as it provides reviewers with insights into an applicant’s strengths in, and philosophies regarding, the discipline.

The personal mission statement includes a description of your focus and goals, which can serve to provide direction for the next one to five years of your career. It can be used not only as a guide, but also as a tool of conscious reflection encouraging you to accomplish your professional objectives.  In the course of this assignment, you will evaluate potential career direction and satisfaction by reflecting on the following questions:

  • What do you hope to accomplish in the profession?
  • What positive and unique qualities do you bring to the profession?
  • How do you see your role in the profession evolving through time?
  • Why is the work you hope to do important?

Your Personal Mission Statement should be a minimum of 500 words, but it should not exceed 1000 words. Therefore, it is important that your writing be clear and concise and that your thoughts and philosophies are effectively communicated to your reader.

The Personal Mission Statement

  • Must be 500 words to 1000 words in length and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  • Must include a header on each page with the following:
    • Personal Mission Statement
    • Student’s name
    • Student’s contact email
    • Date submitted
  • Must address the topic of the mission statement with critical thought.
  • Must document all sources in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
