Discussion 1: Hopes, Challenges, and Strategies

As you begin your studies at Walden, you have probably thought about what you hope to gain from the program of study you will complete. What are your hopes and aspirations as an emerging professional beginning graduate-level study? Apart from a degree in psychology, also think about what you will gain from engaging with the scholarly community at Walden University. Your Program of Study (POS) document can help you anticipate the topics you will learn about and perhaps the kinds of skills you will master as you complete your graduate degree.

This week, you will discuss potential challenges you and your classmates foresee in the coming weeks. Together, you can share strategies that could help you overcome these challenges, as a group and individually.

This dialogue through the Discussion Board is designed to connect you with your new colleagues so that you can develop community and engage with each other in a supportive manner as you begin the educational journey together.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Locate and download your Program of Study (POS) from your Field of Study tab, found in the left navigation menu.
  • Review Walden’s mission and vision statements and Walden’s goals and values in this week’s Learning Resources.
  • Explore the web page “Social Change,” located in this week’s Learning Resources.
  • Reflect on what you hope to achieve as a graduate student personally, professionally, and within the larger community.
  • Consider factors that could pose a challenge to the successful completion of your chosen degree.
  • Reflect on your values, ideals, and goals in relation to what you have learned about Walden.
  • Think about how you will incorporate a commitment to social change, particularly as it relates to the area(s) of interest represented by your program/specialization, into your professional, personal, and academic goals.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post : a description of at least two expectations that you have about your program (e.g., something you hope to get out of the graduate program, for yourself, your family, or your community). Apply those expectations and hopes to Walden’s mission, vision, and values. Then, describe at least two challenges or barriers you foresee in completing your degree. Share and explain at least one strategy you will use to help you overcome those challenges that might also be useful to your colleagues. Then explain why you chose this particular field of study at Walden and how you intend to use your degree.

Genetics

What type of mutant organism would you make if you had the technology? Would you create a new type of worm with longevity? A mutant rice with increased nutritional value? A dog that glows in the dark? All of these currently exist. Think about it; use your imagination; be creative!. What unique organism would you create?

1. Decide what type of organism and what type of mutation you would like to create. (You can pick human, plant, animal, bacteria – whatever you fancy.)

2. Think about what sort of specific technology/techniques you want to use: cloning, molecular gene manipulation, breeding, etc. Be specific about the method (there are many different molecular gene manipulation methods). What genes or proteins will you target to get the phenotype you desire?

3. Explain how your organism will benefit society, ie. justify the expense of funding your research to create this mutant.

4. Draw a detailed picture of your mature organism (May also make clay or other media model if desired.) Take a picture of your drawing. Convert to pdf with CamScanner or other App.

5. Post the picture and a description of your mutant proposal in the discussion area of Canvas:

Discussion 2: Documents And Website Content As Data Sources For A Qualitative Study

Websites and social media sites can provide important sources of data that will help expand your understanding of the stakeholders who are connected to the phenomena you are exploring.

Walden has devoted an entire website to making visible its actions and activities about social change. At the social change website, you will find videos, annual reports, text, and images. As you explore this data source, consider what text, images, and reports you would like to include as part of your data analysis exercise.

To prepare for this Discussion:

· Choose one of the three social change literature review articles found in this week’s Learning Resources and review the article in detail.

· Explore the Walden Social Change website and locate an additional document, video, or webpage that will inform your understanding of the meaning of positive social change. Reflect on any additional sources you find.

· Next, write field notes based on the information you gathered from the Walden social change website and any other documents or websites that might inform your changing impressions about the meaning of positive social change.

· Finally, review the media programs related to coding and consider how you will use this information to support this Discussion. Note: In your Excel Video Coding template there is a tab for your website data. Use this tab to place your content and codes for the website.

Prepare a brief explanation of your understanding of the meaning of positive social change thus far. Refer to the additional sources you have reviewed this week, and comment on how they are shaping your experience. Use the data you gathered from your analytic memo to support your explanation.

Be sure to support your main post and response post with reference to the week’s Learning Resources and other scholarly evidence in APA style.
