Week 6 – Discussion

55 unread replies.1515 replies.

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Refer to the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric under the Settings icon above for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.

 Professional Development: Learning in the Workplace

Prior to beginning this discussion, read the following required articles:

  • “Organizational Learning in Target Setting”
  • “Organizational Learning and Learning Organizations: An Integrative Framework”
  • “Improving Organizational Learning Through Leadership Training”
  • “Systematic Professional Development Training and Its Impact on Teachers’ Attitudes Toward ELLs: SIOP and Guided Coaching”
  • “Review of Organizational Resilience: How Learning Sustains Organizations in Crisis, Disaster, and Breakdowns”

For this discussion, you will be focusing on your self-development and your learning experiences in the context of the workplace. In your initial post, apply basic research methods and the alignment of content within research to the questions below by making connections between your personal experiences and the content from the readings. You might also utilize other peer-reviewed articles of interest to you to support your assertions and conclusions. Analyze how your personal development in the learning and cognition domains have matured and developed through your formative years and work experiences. Your writing should not simply answer each question; a fully developed personal analysis of your own growth and learning processes should be concise and well organized in a manner that exhibits your improved writing ability and reflects APA style format.

In addition to answering the questions below, include an introduction and conclusion to your post.

  • What types of training and education have you received in the workplace?
  • What do you do now that differs from your past educational learning experiences?
  • How have your life experiences affected your learning?
  • Have events in your life influenced your beliefs and how you assert yourself in the learning process?
  • How do you see yourself as a life-long learner?

Next, consider how organizational learning and culture affect you personally and apply skeptical inquiry to the resolution of problems related to your own learning and cognition. How might you adjust your current strategies? Finally, apply ethical principles and professional standards of learning and cognition psychology that you have learned about to teaching or counseling others in the workplace. What implications should you consider when working with others?

This discussion should be approximately 500 words in length and should establish your understanding of the content, apply appropriate methods of ethical practices, and exhibit appropriate scaffolding of personal experience to the week’s content.

What is wrong with the conclusion that eventually all heights will be close to their mean?

analyze assessment tools that would support the diagnostic process for both the substance use and mental health issues

Unit 5 Assignment 1

Assessment of Addiction and Co-occurring Disorders

For this assignment, you will select one of the case scenarios provided in the assignment’s Resources and analyze assessment tools that would support the diagnostic process for both the substance use and mental health issues presented. You will need to compare at least two assessments for each area of concern, including the client’s risk of harm to self or others, and point out the relative strengths and limitations of each. Consider scholarly literature and reviews for your selected assessment tool in the Mental Measurement Yearbook, if available, in order to analyze the level of appropriateness of the tool to assess clients from diverse backgrounds. Formulate a provisional diagnosis following DSM-5 criteria using the assessment template provided. Follow the template to address client strengths, challenges, and level of care (see page 75 of the text). This assignment sets the stage for the formulation of the treatment plan in u09a1.

Follow these assignment requirements:

If there are issues affecting the community that have nothing to do directly with the one you’re concerned with, do you nonetheless have an obligation to become involved?

Weekly Discussion 1

Systems and Professional Integrity

Ethics is a code of thinking and behavior governed by a combination of personal, moral, legal, and social standards of what is right. Although the definition of “right” varies with situations and cultures, its meaning in the context of a community work involves many guiding principles with which most community activists and service providers would probably agree. Above all else, do no harm. Hippocrates put this in words over 2,000 years ago, and it’s still Rule Number One.

You have volunteered to run a community violence-prevention program, working with kids who are gang members or gang hangers-on. The kids trust you, and sometimes tell you about some of their less-than-savory activities. The police also know you work with gang members and often ask you for information about kids. What are you obligated to tell them or to keep from them?

If you are actively striving to do “good,” how far does that obligation take you? If there are issues affecting the community that have nothing to do directly with the one you’re concerned with, do you nonetheless have an obligation to become involved? What if you don’t really understand the whole situation, and your involvement may do as much harm as good—do you still have an ethical obligation to support or become active on the right side? What if your support or activism endangers or compromises your community intervention? Your initial post should be at least 300 words in length. Respond to at least two of your classmates by Day 7.

Explain how demands and expectations in one setting could impact the ability to meet demands and expectations in another setting.

Identify the two systems you chose and describe settings within each system that influence your life and behavior/activity. Explain how demands and expectations in one setting could impact the ability to meet demands and expectations in another setting.

Scales and Variables Assignment

INSTRUCTIONS: After reading the helps below, identify the scale of measurement and/or the IV and DV for each of the questions on page two. Use this paper to record your answer and upload it into Bb.

——————————————————————————————————————————————

Variables can be Nominal, Ordinal, Interval, or Ratio.

Designs also have an Independent Variable (IV) and a Dependent Variable (DV), or multiples of these as you will learn in a later module on factorials designs.

There are some hints to remembering the definition and being able to identify these. Consider the following, or you may come up with some on your own.

SCALES

NOMINAL= “name”

(Begins with “n” and just names something)

ORDINAL= “order”

(Begins with “o” and puts data in order without a specific distance between the points)

INTERVAL=”even”

(Goes one step beyond the Ordinal in that the distances between the data points are even; It does not have a “true zero” point meaning zero does not mean the absence of something.)

RATIO=”zero”

(ratiO/zerO; The distances between data points are even as in the Interval scale but there is also a true zero meaning that “zero” on the scale actually means that absence of the thing being measured.)

VARIABLES

Independent Variable (IV) = What “I” do to this variable affects the DV (The IV is the one that is manipulated)

Dependant Variable (DV) = This variable “depends” on what I do to the IV (The DV is the one that changes as a result of the IV -assuming there is an affect of one on the other)

QUESTIONS

1. A researcher is measuring gender and identifies Females with a “1” and Males with a “2”. Which scale is being used in this case?

Caffeine Click here to enter text.

3. A scientist is measuring the affect of adding alcohol to water by measuring the temperature of water with and without alcohol added after being put in a freezer for 24 hours. The temperature is being measured in Celsius with “0” being considered the freezing point of water. Would the temperature be measured as an Interval scale or a Ratio scale? Clearly explain the reason for your answer.

how would you present the research to the public in light of the apparent discrepancy?

Some groups and organizations tend to want to present research findings only when it agrees with their beliefs or is favorable to them.  Militaries are often known to practice this, allowing results to be public only after they approve them.  Religious groups may also attempt to deny access to their members, or prevent research findings from being made public if the findings disagree with their religious beliefs.    Of course, this is not good research practice.  In fact, by making findings public, it gives others the opportunity to analyze the findings and validate the procedures.  Remember, many of the errors in research are due more to the interpretation of findings rather than the procedures themselves.  We should also remember that any research can only tell us a small piece of knowledge and can in fact be incorrect in its design and results.  Humans are imperfect in our research efforts, even though we want to pursue perfection in what we do. For these reasons, we know research is imperfect, but so are our efforts to understand scripture.      For this discussion, imagine you have just conducted what you believe is a well-designed ground breaking research.  You have conducted the research and analyzed your findings.  You can think in generalities, or think of some specific topic area where this could happen.  If your findings seemed to contradict what you believed about scripture, how would you reconcile that?  It’s not as easy as saying, “I would just follow the scriptures.”  First, because you could be wrong in your understanding of scripture, or you could have made some error in the research design.  Second, because now that you have discovered something in your research, there is some level of obligation to present it to the public, even though you don’t like or agree with the findings.  How would you reconcile this in your mind?  What actions might it lead you to take?  And how would you present the research to the public in light of the apparent discrepancy?    Be sure to use depth of thought in your discussion and thorough (at least 250 words).  Also include at least two replies to other students that contribute to the discussion (usually at least 100 words).  Be respectful of other’s views even though you are free to disagree with them.

limitations of Western psychology in non-Western countries.

Discussion: Characteristics of Indigenous Psychology

Indigenous psychology is an emerging field of psychology that relies on a local understanding of human behavior to develop theories, conduct research, and address challenges. Indigenous psychology evolved in response to the use of Western psychology in countries where it did not seem to fit. The main purpose of indigenous psychology is to practice psychology in a way that is appropriate for the social, political, historical, and cultural contexts in the area it serves.

Your course text highlights the limitations of general psychology, a term the authors frequently use interchangeably with Western psychology and mainstream psychology. In the article “Origins and Development of Indigenous Psychologies: An International Analysis,” 15 contributing authors describe the characteristics of indigenous psychology in different regions. They also detail the limitations of Western psychology when applied to non-Western countries.

To prepare for this Discussion:

· Review Chapter 5 in your course text, paying particular attention to the sections on “Limitations of General Psychology” and “Indigenous Psychologies.”

· Review the article “Origins and Development of Indigenous Psychologies: An International Analysis.” Consider the similarities and differences in what authors from different parts of the world have to say.

· Think about the limitations of Western psychology in non-Western countries.

· Reflect on the characteristics of indigenous psychology.

· Think about how indigenous psychology responds to the limitations of Western psychology.

· Select two limitations of Western psychology in non-Western cultures.

· Then, select two characteristics of indigenous psychology that could be used in response to the limitation you selected.

With these thoughts in mind:

By Day 3

Post an explanation of two limitations of Western psychology in non-Western countries. Next, describe two characteristics of indigenous culture that speak to the need for indigenous psychology. Finally, provide examples as to how these two characteristics of indigenous culture could be used in response to the two limitations of Western psychology you identified.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.
