If you were given the task to add another policy recommendation what would it be and why?

The Diversity Movement

The diversity movement suggests that there is strength in our differences and that our differences enhance each other. At the same time, the movement insists that our differences should not have economic, social, or political consequences. We are entitled to the same access to resources and opportunities regardless of our differences. The human suffering from Hurricane Katrina and the images of victims has stimulated the debate about differential access to resources.

Read the report Women in the Wake of the Storm: Examining the Post-Katrina Realities of the Women of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. On the basis of your reading, create a report, answering the following:

  • Discuss the prominent dimensions of diversity revealed as a result of the Hurricane Katrina disaster.
  • Discuss factors that specifically influenced women’s vulnerability to Hurricane Katrina. While answering, consider the primary dimensions mentioned in the lectures as well as the secondary dimensions such as parental and marital status, income, educational level, military experience, geographic location, work background, and religious beliefs.
  • Describe the implications for healthcare organizations as a result of the disaster.
  • Discuss at least of two of the policy implications that are outlined in the report. If you were given the task to add another policy recommendation what would it be and why?

Make your report in a 4- to 5-page Microsoft Word document.

How do these stereotypes contribute to the poor being held responsible for their health status?

Determinants of Health

Although inequalities in income and education underlie many health disparities, the poor are sometimes held responsible for their health status. For instance, Dr. Ichiro Kawachi, a Harvard University professor and social epidemiologist, reports that the ability to avoid negative health behaviors like smoking and eating unhealthy foods depends on access to “income, education, and the social determinants of health.” On the basis of your knowledge of the health of the poor, answer the following questions:

  • Should the poor be held responsible for their health disparities? Why or why not?
  • What are some common stereotypes of the poor? How do these stereotypes contribute to the poor being held responsible for their health status?
  • What conditions in your community promote or hinder healthy choices?
  • In addition to the above, consider the input that research on women has lagged behind research on men. Many health treatments that address health risks for women are based on research conducted on men. With reference to your understanding of the healthcare system, mention the factors that determine whether the health treatments based on research on men will be successful with women.

Women and Healthcare

Women have healthcare requirements in addition to those of men because of their biology and gender roles. Due to their gender roles, they are frequently responsible for the health and healthcare of others. The resources they need to care for others may create constraints on their ability to care for themselves.

Also, it is important to consider the workplace when considering women’s health issues because the position of women in the workforce has great impact on the healthcare they receive. Many businesses have recognized the need to create a more diverse workforce by selective hiring based on the need to increase selected groups in their workforce. Some businesses have been more proactive than others. For example, let’s consider that a business workforce’s diversity plan includes the following benchmarks:

  • Maintain women’s representation at a minimum of 60 percent.
  • Increase women’s representation in nontraditional occupations from 16 percent to 20 percent.
  • Increase women’s representation in senior positions (grade twelve and above or equivalent) from 28 percent to 35 percent.

On the basis of what you have learned so far, answer the following questions:

  • How can the dimensions of diversity, such as age, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and religion affect individual or collective healthcare needs and capabilities?
  • Could the above statements constitute discriminatory hiring practices? Why or why not?
  • What would the implications of diversity-based policy development be in relation to healthcare needs?
  • Describe a workforce diversity plan using at least three dimensions of diversity. Additionally, explain how it relates to improved health-service delivery.

What type of feedback will you gather to analyze, if the program was successful?

Most Prevalent Health Issues

Select a program that you would like to develop in your community or city based on one of the six most prevalent serious health problems currently faced by communities today such as poverty, health security, and communicable diseases.

Based on your research, create a 2- to 3-page report in a Microsoft Word document including answers to the following questions:

· Identify your chosen problem and why it is a health community concern?

· Identify how you will assess the need for the program? What type of data will you review?

· How do you determine the target audience? List any one goal and three objectives. What do you want to achieve when you develop the program? What will be the outcome? What is the purpose of developing goal and objectives?

· How will you get people in the community involved to gain support for your proposal?

· What realistic method will be used to market the program in your community? Keep in mind the location, transportation, parking, and type of building.

· How will you implement the program? What type of “best practice” strategy will you include in your program?

· What type of feedback will you gather to analyze, if the program was successful? Why accurate feedback is critical to make certain, the program is a success? How will you collect objective data?
