For the second part of this discussion, apply what you have learned from the course materials for this module and your own research. We’ll complete this discussion together, as each of us weighs in on the following topics. (Begin contributing on Wednesday):

  1. Normal respiration is dependent on several factors including; chemical regulation, physical pressure sensors, acid-base balance and nervous system regulation. Briefly discuss how these factors influence taking one breath.

Breathing is something most of us take for granted each and every day. It is something that normally happens unconsciously and not even thought about. Well at least not until we have problems doing so. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the name given to several disease processes that compromise the lungs and air passages.

  1. How does normal anatomy compare to a person’s anatomy with COPD? What are the similarities? The differences? What treatments are currently being used to help people deal with COPD?

Adults and children alike suffer each and every year with respiratory tract infections. According to the American Journal of Medicine respiratory tract infections number 1.25 million per year and cost insurance companies $470 million dollars a year.

  1. What mechanisms are there in the upper respiratory tract to battle infections? What about the lower respiratory tract? How is infection treated?
