4. Discuss some of the ways in which academic and scholarly writing differs from narrative or persuasive writing. Be specific. Bullet points are encouraged.

5. Find an example of propaganda. Post a link to the example. Then explain how you know it is propaganda by integrating what you have learned from the Hobbs and McGee article. Remember that propaganda doesn’t necessarily mean that the material is false, but that it is presented in a persuasive way to promote a particular cause.

6. Think about the validity issues that must be considered when using an experimental design. Please give an example of an experimental effect on validity and what you could do to mitigate it in a study. Get CREATIVE! I may give a couple extra credit points if you provide a particularly detailed answer that is creative and shows depth of knowledge.

7. Your research questions are: Do special education students at Riverdale Elementary School receive the services mandated by law? Do the students receive the services they need to be successful? Design and describe a brief study based on this question including your methods, participants, measures, and an operationalized definition of “successful”. Did you choose Qualitative or Quantitative methods? Why?

Reading

First, read these two works of “analog literature” often thought of as important precedents to digital literary work:

· The Garden of Forking Paths, a short story by Jorge Luis Borges

· Grapefruit, a book of poems by Yoko Ono (background info)

One of the first works of electronic literature for screens, appropriately named:

· First Screening by bpNichol. Please read the intro, watch the MP4 video version, then briefly look at the JavaScript version to see how it differs from the video version.

· First Screening source code. Take a look at this, see what it feels like to read it, imagine writing it.

This 1997 essay by Espen Aarseth is considered by many to be an important early articulation of electronic literature as a genre. His terms are dated and it’s a bit dense, but worth reading in terms of the groundwork he lays, as well as the labyrinthine connection to Borges.

· Ergodic Literature: An Introduction by Espen J. Aarseth

Discussion Post Guidelines

Topics are available Monday morning, and discussions close at 11pm Sunday. You must initially post/respond sometime Tuesday-Thursday (in approx 500 words), and respond to two of your peers (in approx 250 words) sometime Thursday-Saturday. I will read all your posts and comments, make notes, and respond with a video that I’ll record on Sunday. In approximately 500 words, please write a post that addresses the specific works and ideas you have encountered this week. Include questions you have that you don’t know how to answer. As we dig deeper into the course, you are strongly encouraged to draw parallels and intersections between the various works and artists and writers you have encountered. Please incorporate specific quotes and references from the work as examples to support your ideas and observations. I don’t want to see posts without specific examples, or claims made without evidence. (Note that claims are different from questions.) Failure to include examples will result in a significantly lowered grade. In addition, please revisit the syllabus for my grading policy on discussion and workshop posts. Here are prompts for you to consider when formulating your posts. You can choose to focus on one of these, or go a different route if you wish, as long as it’s relevant to the readings and the course’s aims.

· How do “Garden of Forking Paths” and Grapefruit set the stage for us to think about writing and digital media? What about them is suggestive of code, instructions, interfaces, data storage, social media, or other digital elements?

· In any/all of the works, what is absent? What aren’t you told by the authors, what is withheld? What information do you not have, and how does not having it affect the experience of the work?

· How is the dimension of time operating in “First Screening”? How do its notions of time compare to what happens in the Borges story, or the Ono poems? How is the recording of the original “First Screening” different from its JS version? How did it feel to read the code? What did you notice?

· How is it to read the Aarseth essay now, 22 years after its original publication? What feels still resonant to you, and what feels out of date? Why?

·

· Applied Anthro.
