John Stewart has recently joined ABC in the capacity of an investment advisor. As a way to attract additional clients, John has asked for your help in preparing some educational material for a seminar taking place later this month.

He has asked you put together a report on the following investments and calculate the returns of these investments (including dollar values and percentages) to illustrate how they work.

Assignment

1. Perform the 5 calculations listed below:
   • Show all of your work as well as any formulas that you used.
   • If you used MS Excel to arrive at your answers, then you must provide an explanation of your methodology.
     

     A stock that does not pay a dividend of which you buy 100 shares for $25.00 per share and sell the 100 shares for $27.50 per share a year later. You pay the $50.00 commission when you sell the securities.

     A 5-year bond that you purchase for $1,000 pays a 6% yearly rate. It is paid semiannually, and you hold the bond until maturity.

     The current yield on a bond that is priced at $89 has a 6% coupon.

     The yield-to-maturity (YTM) on a 7.25% ($1,000 par value) bond that has 10 years remaining to maturity, currently trading in the market at $825.

     The holding period return (HPR) for 1,000 shares of a no-load mutual fund currently selling at an NAV of $11, purchased a year ago at an NAV of $10.50 per share, including $300 of distributed investment income dividends and capital gains dividends of $350.

2. Next, answer the following questions:
   • Explain systematic and unsystematic (also known as nonsystematic) risk.
   • What are the different types of investments a person can make?
   • Explain a stock’s beta coefficient and how it ties into systematic versus unsystematic risk.
   • What are the differences between the various types of bonds?
   • What do bond ratings indicate, and what 2 major agencies are in charge of assigning these ratings?
3. Compile your calculations, MS Excel tables and explanations (if applicable), and your responses to the 5 points above into a single Word document.

As the CPS social worker, the following resources can be addressed with the family to educate on the available services to assist and aide the family with the steps needed to apply for each of these if desired.Information provided varies depending on the state and available resources and requirements.

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)-this is a program that provide funds for financial assistance and related support services.With this service Isabella is able to be provided with services such as childcare assistance after she has the child and returns to school to allow the baby to attend daycare.Under the TANF service a program called TEA can be provided to assist Isabella with finances monthly to care for her child.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)- this program can be utilized to provide Isabella and family with food assistance and nutrition education.

Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)- is a program that provides supplemental foods, health care referrals, and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk.This service can be provided to Isabella during her pregnancy and until her child is approximately 6 weeks old and then the child will continue receiving these services until the age of 5.

Prenatal Care/Provider- CPS social worker can assist the family with finding a prenatal care provider and assist with transporting the child to and from the scheduled appointments.

Medicaid- is a program that provides insurance for Isabella to be able to attend doctor appointments, get ultrasounds, lab work and other needed appointments to ensure she has a healthy baby.

Support Group-CPS social worker can assist the family with locating programs such as teen pregnancy and parenting support groups and support groups for rape victims to allow Isabella to connect with individuals with similarities.

Counseling- CPS social worker can make referrals/recommendations for Isabella, her mother and brother to receive mental health services (family therapy, individual therapy, group therapy).This service would be recommended due to Isabella suffering from behavioral problems (with the attempt to gather information to see if these issues were pre-existing to her being raped and becoming pregnant or if it occurred after) , learning disorder (to see if other testing is needed or if this is related to diagnoses such as ADHD, combined type or some form of intellectual disability), anxiety and PTSD.It would be recommended for her mother receive this service due to her suffering from anxiety and depression.The brother could also receive these services due to the mother’s concerns as well as making sure that he has not been exposed to similar circumstances.Through services as such so the family can work on relationship strengthening, recognizing triggers of their anxiety, depression, and PTSD, process the traumatic event and discuss appropriate ways to cope with the real-life situation.

Child Birth Education Classes- CPS social worker can assist the family in finding local child birthing classes that will answer questions and assist Isabella through the process leading up to child birth.

Present the underlying tenants of the theoretical underpinnings of the intervention.

Keeping the baby- Within the Hispanic culture familism values is important.In families with high familism values it is more likely that the child will be kept within the home and the family member will assist in caring for the child. The lower the familism value the more difficult this would be.If Isabella decides to keep the child parenting classes

Adoption/foster care- If the family decides to put the child up for adoption the CPS social worker can assist the family with the process of placing their newborn up for adoption, the requirements, expectations and other important information about the process.

Task 1 You want to start a summer business to earn money. What will you do? You have to consider how much money you can afford to invest in this business, how much it will cost you to make each item, and how much you’re going to charge for each item. Research something that would be reasonable to make and sell with the startup investment you have determined. 

a. What is the total amount of money you are willing to invest in this business?

 b. What item are you going to make and sell? Why?

 c. Describe how your business will work. How much will it cost you to make each item? How much will you sell each item for? d. Do you think your business will be profitable? Explain your answer.

Task 2 In Task 1 you determined how much of your own money you’re willing to spend to get your business started. This is your limit—when making your product you can’t exceed this amount. 

a. Write an inequality that represents the fact that while making your product you can’t exceed this spending limit.

b. Solve this inequality and graph the solution on a number line. Explain what your solution means in terms of the situation. 

c. In Task 1 you determined how much you will charge for each item. Write an equation that represents your total earnings based on the price of your item and how many you sell. 

d. Using your answer from part B and your equation from part C, what is the most money you can hope to earn from your business? 

e. Don’t forget that at the beginning of the process you had to spend some of your own money to get started. With the costs taken into account, what was your total profit? Did you make money or lose money? Now that you have these values, would you adjust your business plan from Task 1? If so, how?

Task 3 Your parents heard about the success of your business and they want to help you out. Suppose they want to give you an additional $300 to put toward your business. However, there’s a catch. If you make more than $600 total, you have to give them 10% of your earnings above $600. For example, if you have earned $650, then you owe 10% of $50, or $5, to your parents. 

a. Now that you have an additional $300, revise your inequality from part A of Task 2 to reflect your new spending limit. Solve this inequality and graph the solution on a number line. Explain what your solution means in terms of the situation. 

b. If you still sell your item for the same price, what is the most money you can hope to earn from your business now? 

c. Will you have to pay your parents? If so, determine how much you will owe them. 

d. Think about how much time it will take you to create your product. You have 200 hours this summer to devote to creating your product. Write an inequality that represents your time constraint. 

e. Solve your inequality from part D and graph your solution on a number line. Explain what your solution means in terms of the situation.

 f. With the costs taken into account, what was your total profit? Did you make or lose money? Now that you have these values, would you adjust your business plan from Task 1? If so, how?
